After reading several newspaper articles on the privatization of Casco Bay Bridge, I’m convinced that Maine Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt made the right decision.

Handing the bridge over to a Florida company that specializes in the maintenance and operation of bridges should serve to minimize Casco Bay Bridge downtime over the long haul. Our bridge isn’t getting any younger.

I still have issues with the commissioner’s failure to explain his plans or consult with the Legislature before signing the contract. He left a lot of people in the dark.

However, this can be forgiven in light of the apparent need for expediency. I’m sure he visualized lengthy discussions of the pros and cons of privatization and decided to act unilaterally as commissioner.
