A Toyota sport utility vehicle hit a telephone pole and fire hydrant Monday night in the area of Highland and Boothby avenues in South Portland, knocking power out to more than 3,000 homes in South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Portland, South Portland police said.
Central Maine Power and FairPoint Communications are on the scene replacing the pole, according to Lt. Tom Simonds of the South Portland Police Department.
“There will be a traffic impact for another hour or two,” he said shortly before 10 p.m., “but they’re hoping to get the power back on hopefully in another 20 to 40 minutes.”
The accident occurred at 7:45 p.m. The driver of the SUV, Amy Crowley Gleason, 32, of Steep Falls, was not injured, police said.
“We think it was just before it started to snow,” Simonds said.
