Police are investigating to determine why a driver crashed a Subaru Outback into the stone porch of a home on Sawyer Street in South Portland on Wednesday afternoon.

South Portland police Sgt. Kevin Gerrish said the car smashed into the porch of the home at 996 Sawyer St. He said that if the porch had been wood, the car likely would have gone into the home’s living room.

“Luckily, the front porch was stone or the damage could have been a lot worse,” Gerrish said. One person was in the house when the accident occurred, around 3 p.m. That person was not hurt.

Gerrish said the driver, a woman in her 40s, failed to stop for a stop sign at Sawyer and Stillman streets. Police suspect alcohol may have been involved.

The driver was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for a mental health evaluation, which is why police were still not identifying her Wednesday night, Gerrish said. The driver suffered minor injuries.

The woman has not been charged and the accident remains under investigation.

South Portland tax records show that the home was built in 1924 and is valued at $451,000.
