A man who robbed a downtown Saco pharmacy last year was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Portland to serve 51 months in federal prison.

William C. Day, 40, of Saco vaulted over the pharmacy counter Aug. 10 at Community Pharmacy at 244 Main St. and told the employees there, “This is a robbery,” according to a prosecution document filed with the court.

Day demanded the three employees put their hands on the counter and ordered the pharmacist to give him bottles of oxycodone and Percocet, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Chapman wrote in the prosecution document.

Someone at the pharmacy triggered a silent alarm and a bystander flagged down an arriving police officer to tell him that the robber had fled down the back alley and climbed over a fence. Officer Shawn Lebrecque chased Day and eventually found him in woods on School Street, police said at the time of Day’s arrest.

In total, Day stole $759 worth of narcotics, which police recovered, according to court documents.

Day pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen on Nov. 20 to a charge of pharmacy robbery. The judge also sentenced Day on Friday to serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.
