Alfie Michaud is returning to his alma mater to serve as a volunteer goaltending coach for the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team, the school announced Wednesday.

Michaud, 39, was named most outstanding player of the NCAA hockey tournament in 1999 when he led Maine to the national championship, guiding the Black Bears to 3-2 overtime victory against New Hampshire.

Michaud played briefly with the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks and for several AHL teams during a pro career that included nearly a decade in Europe. He also served as a goalie instructor for the Portland Pirates in the 2014-15 season.

BASEBALL

USM 5, UW-STEVENS POINT 2: Kyle O’Connor and Matt Bender hit RBI singles as Southern Maine (5-2) opened the scoring with a three-run fourth inning in a win over the Pointers (2-7) in Auburndale, Florida.

BOWDOIN SPLITS WITH HAMILTON: Evann Dumont-LaPointe laced a two-run double to right center as the Polar Bears (8-1) scored three times in the first inning of a 4-1 win over Hamilton (8-4) during the second game of their doubleheader in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Continentals won the first game 14-8.

CARTHAGE 15, COLBY 3: Reed Hero double and tripled, drove in four runs and scored two to lead the Red Men (4-5) in a rout of Colby (2-5) at Tucson, Arizona.

Colby lost to Buena Vista 10-8 in an earlier game.

SOFTBALL

USM 11, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 7: Samantha Crosman singled home two runs as Southern Maine scored five times in the top of the eighth inning for a victory at Clermont, Florida.

The Presidents (1-6) forced the extra inning with a three-run seventh.

Mary Caron finished with four hits.

USM 5, SALVE REGINA 4: Samantha Crosman’s single to right center scored Shelby Obert and Amber Kelly in the bottom of the seventh as the Huskies (7-1) completed a comeback from a 4-1 deficit against Salve Regina (1-6) in their second game Wednesday.

Kelly blasted a two-run home run in the fifth to bring Southern Maine within 4-3.

UNE SWEEPS WENTWORTH: Paige Moore-Haskell and Sydney Helmbrecht each drove in three runs in a 15-2 win in the opener, and the University of New England (9-3) completed a doubleheader sweep with a 9-1 victory over the Leopards (4-6) in Game 2 at Boston.

Avery Alberghini’s inside-the-park homer highlighted the second game.

COLBY 5, ST. LAWRENCE 3: Paige Hartnett drew a bases-load walk to force home Tori Sansone and start a five-run rally in the sixth, as Colby (3-4) overcame a 2-0 deficit against St. Lawrence (3-4) at Clermont, Florida.

The Mules fell 6-1 to Scranton later in the day.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 14, KEENE STATE 13: Jack Allard’s tight-angle shot with 17 seconds remaining gave the Bobcats (6-1) the final lead in a wild victory over Keene State (3-3) at Lewiston.

Allard finished with four goals. Charlie Fay also scored four for Bates.

MOUNT IDA 17, USM 12: Jon Berry scored four goals to lead the Mustangs (4-3) past Southern Maine (4-1) at Newton, Massachusetts.

Nate DelGiudice had four goals for the Huskies. Austin Watts scored three.

ST. JOSEPH’S 9, HUSSON 5: Jake O’Brien and Luigi Grimaldi each scored twice as St. Joseph’s (3-4) reeled off six straight goals to take a 7-4 lead against the Eagles (0-5) at Bangor.

O’Brien finished with three goals.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 14, ENDICOTT 5: Emma Beecher had four goals and two assists, Megan O’Connor added three goals, and Bowdoin (3-3) coasted to victory over the Gulls (1-6) at Beverly, Massachusetts.

ST. JOSEPH’S 8, REGIS 1: Elyse Caiazzo scored five times, Kelsey Dumond had three goals, and the Monks (5-1) easily handled Regis (2-2) at Portland.
