A disgruntled former janitor at a Standish law firm landed in the county jail Monday after she allegedly walked into the law firm and threatened an employee with a handgun.

Cathy A. Conley, 55, of Standish had been let go by the law offices of Beagle, Steeves, & Ridge at 24 Northeast Road just before the incident took place around 11:15 a.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Lt. Donald Foss said his department’s investigation revealed that shortly after she was terminated from her janitorial position at the law office, Conley returned with a handgun tucked inside her purse. She allegedly threatened one employee at the law office.

“During the interaction, the woman (Conley) removed a pistol from her purse and made a statement threatening to use the weapon,” Foss said. “The pistol was then pushed back into her purse and she exited the building without further incident.”

Police said Conley never aimed or pointed the weapon at anyone. Staff members called 911 after Conley had left the property in her vehicle.

Deputies from the sheriff’s department located Conley at her home, where she cooperated with police officers.

She was arrested and was being held Monday evening at the Cumberland County Jail on a charge of terrorizing. Her bail has been set at $5,000 cash.
