Police said the driver of the 2003 Mercury that tumbled off the viaduct, Melissa Medina, 37, of Windham, was operating southbound on Route 1 on the viaduct when the vehicle struck the guardrails and fell from the overpass.

The Mercury landed on its roof onto the bed of a Ford F150 pickup truck operated by Roy Ordway, 60, of Bath.

Medina was extricated and transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life threatening injuries.

Medina’s 12-year-old son was also extricated and transported to Maine Medical with non-life threatening injuries.

Ordway was not injured.

“The accident caused a significant traffic backup due to the viaduct being closed and traffic re-routed through Bath,” according to a police department press release.

As of 5 p.m. the traffic was flowing smoothly and the viaduct is open, said police.

Maine DOT has also responded.

Police say the accident is under investigation and “there was no alcohol or other known impairment to either driver.”

Bath police are asking to be contacted by anyone who witnessed the Mercury before it went off the viaduct.

Along with Bath Police, Fire and EMS, we were assisted by Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, EMA, and Communications Center, West Bath Fire and Woolwich Fire departments.
