CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Some ski resorts are done for the season, but Maine’s Sugarloaf is taking advantage of the Polar Vortex to fire up its snow guns.

The resort began making snow Sunday and planned to continue through Tuesday night to add to the base before Reggaefest later this month.

It’s the first time in the resort’s 65-year history that it’s made snow in April.

Sugarloaf teased the snowmaking on April Fools’ Day, but it was no joke. General Manager Karl Strand said it has been a challenging winter and that the snow-making effort shows that the resort is doing everything it can to create good skiing for customers.

Part of New England was getting substantial snowfall on Monday, but that was not the case in Maine.
