Recently, there have been a few articles in the paper concerning the disposal of waste. Having attempted composting in the past, with the only success being the attraction of skunks, we had been putting our compost in the trash for years.

We first learned of Garbage to Garden at Gorham Savings Bank’s Launchpad presentations. Both of us were impressed with the service but were disappointed to learn it wasn’t offered in Gorham. After contacting Garbage to Garden, I learned that we could still take part in the program as long as we provided our own drop-off.

Aside from putting the compost to good use, another advantage soon became apparent. Usually, I would be using one Gorham trash bag a week at a cost of $2.50. After enrolling in Garbage to Garden, this dropped to one bag a month at the most, thus reducing the out-of-pocket cost for our household refuse.

It is possible to donate time to certain nonprofits in lieu of a monthly payment. This option, along with access to some great compost for the gardens, makes this a great service for most households.
