Flagship Cinemas intends to return to Falmouth by opening a new movie theater this summer next to the Wal-Mart on Route 1.

The company, which is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, opened its first cinema in Falmouth in 1995, according to a news release Monday. The cinema was sold in 1997 to Hoyts Cinemas, which over time became Regal Entertainment Group, according to town records. Regal closed its Falmouth operation in 2012.

The Falmouth cinema will debut the company’s new model, Flagship Premium Cinemas, which offers plush, power-reclining chairs with ottomans and updated digital sound and projection. It also will offer reserved seating, self-serve soda stations, specialty film programming and other amenities, according to the company. Ten screens are planned.

“Adding a high-quality movie experience back into the community’s entertainment mix is excellent news for our residents and businesses, not just in Falmouth, but also in the entire region,” Theo Holtwijk, Falmouth’s director of long-range planning and economic development, said in the release.

A grand opening will be planned for the summer. The cinema will occupy space leased from Wal-Mart, according to the release.

The new Falmouth Flagship Cinema will be the company’s 15th movie theater in the United States. The other 14 Flagship theaters have a total of 112 screens in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
