Sanford police say the death of a woman whose body was found floating Wednesday evening in the Mousam River doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

Detective Cpl. Eric Small identified the woman in a press release as Lorilie A. Payeur, 50, of Sanford.

Police said a passer-by saw Payeur’s body in the river just south of the Emery Street Bridge and notified the Sanford Regional Communication Center at 5:54 p.m.

The Sanford Fire Department responded and paramedics determined that the woman was dead, Small said. Officers and detectives from the police department’s criminal investigation division determined that anything criminal was unlikely, but Payeur’s body was turned over to the state Medical Examiner’s Office and the cause of her death remains under investigation.
