BOSTON — Taylor Lux hit a ninth-inning single that drove in Samantha Crosman and lifted the University of Southern Maine to a 3-2 victory against UMass-Boston, completing a sweep of a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Thursday.
The Huskies (19-8-1, 4-4) earned a 10-0 victory in six innings – Crosman had three RBI and scored twice – in the opener against the Beacons (18-10, 5-3).
In the second game, UMass- Boston led 1-0 before USM rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Crosman singled home Amber Kelly before Ally Pillar came home on a passed ball.
But Taylor Pawlina’s fly to right drove in Jackie Flynn in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.
In the opener, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead, then made it 4-0 in the third when Crosman tripled home two runs and later scored on Kat McKay’s single.
USM added one run in the fifth and five in the sixth, when Kelly had a two-run double, and Crosman added an RBI single and also scored.
BATES, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND SPLIT: Melissa Sprague struck out nine over five shutout innings while UNE (21-11) built a 7-0 lead on the way to a 7-3 win in the opener against Bates (3-23) at Lewiston.
The Bobcats won the second game, 6-5.
In the opener, the Nor’easters took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Lauren Jones’ RBI single, and added four in the fifth when Kelly Murphy and Andrea Gosper drew bases-loaded walks.
In the second game, with the score 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Maddie Inlow hit a two-out double to left. Madison Fox then laced a single through the left side, with Inlow rounding third as the ball was bobbled in left field to score uncontested.
BASEBALL
BABSON 12, SOUTHERN MAINE 8: Mark Webber’s fourth-inning grand slam increased a 3-0 lead to 7-0 as Babson (18-12-1) pulled away from the Huskies (18-9) at Gorham.
Webber added an RBI single during a four-run sixth inning to finish with five RBI on a pair of hits. He also scored twice.
Jack Halpin finished with two hits for the Beavers, with two RBI and two runs.
BOWDOIN 8, HUSSON 2: Chad Martin and Colby Joncas each drilled RBI doubles as the Polar Bears (15-10) jumped on Husson (15-13) for four runs in the first inning at Brunswick.
Bowdoin added a run in the fourth before stretching the lead to 8-0 with a three-run sixth. Martin lifted an RBI triple and also scored in the sixth.
