ST. LOUIS — Jayson Werth’s three-run home run capped a four-run first inning and Joe Ross had another stingy outing for the Washington Nationals in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Ross (3-0) allowed one run on six hits in six innings, raising his ERA to 0.79. He has given up only two runs in 222/3 innings.

Werth added an RBI single in the eighth, his fifth RBI in the first two games of a weekend series and 10th of the year. Washington goes for a sweep Sunday after raising its record to 8-24 at 11-year-old Busch Stadium.

Opponents had been 2 for 13 with no runs in the first inning against Jaime Garcia (1-2) before the Nationals jumped on the lefty for four runs on three hits. Daniel Murphy had an RBI single before Werth hit his fourth homer over the left-field wall.

METS 6, GIANTS 5: Michael Conforto and Wilmer Flores homered and New York won its eighth in a row, building an early lead for Jacob deGrom and holding off San Francisco in New York.

The crowd of 44,466 was the largest for a regular-season game at Citi Field since the park opened in 2009, with a lot of fans attracted by the Noah Syndergaard Garden Gnome giveaway.

PIRATES 5, REDS 1: Francisco Liriano won for the first time since opening day and John Jaso homered to open the bottom of the first as Pittsburgh won at home for its sixth straight win and the Reds’ sixth consecutive loss.

Liriano (2-1) allowed one run in 62/3 innings.

MARLINS 7, BREWERS 5: Adeiny Hechavarria had four hits, including one of the four Miami solo home runs at Milwaukee.

ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2: Trevor Story’s two-run triple in the top of the ninth inning broke a tie, and Colorado won at Phoenix.

TIGERS 4, TWINS 1: Jordan Zimmermann won his fifth straight start to begin his first season with Detroit, and Justin Upton hit a three-run homer to help the Tigers win in Minneapolis.

ATHLETICS 2, ASTROS 0: Jesse Hahn pitched into the seventh inning in his return to the majors and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as host Oakland beat Houston.

RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 3: Curt Casali drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning as Tampa Bay won at St. Petersburg, Florida.

WHITE SOX 8, ORIOLES 7: Jose Abreu hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the ninth inning off reliever Vance Worley as Chicago won at Baltimore.

RANGERS 7, ANGELS 2: Rougned Odor matched a franchise record with three doubles and Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer for Texas at Arlington, Texas.

INTERLEAGUE

PHILLIES 4, INDIANS 3: Freddy Galvis homered and had the go-ahead single to lead Philadelphia, at home, to its fifth straight win.

NOTES

Twins: Third baseman Trevor Plouffe began a rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers. Barring any setbacks, he’s expected to join the Twins on Tuesday.

NATIONALS: Catcher Wilson Ramos remained on the bereavement list while in Venezuela following the death of his grandfather.

CARDINALS: Third-base coach Jose Oquendo will undergo right knee replacement surgery next month and won’t return to the team this season.
