The Food and Drug Administration is warning that a sweetener commonly used in chewing gums and breath mints can be fatal to dogs.

Xylitol, also known as sugar alcohol, has been implicated in dog poisonings over the last few years.

The sweetener, which is also found in some baked goods, chewable vitamins, mouthwash, toothpaste and cough syrup, is not dangerous to humans but might cause vomiting, lassitude, weakness, seizures and collapse in dogs.

There have been no reports of cats being made sick by xylitol, perhaps because they are not attracted to sweet foods.
