SMAA PLAYOFFS: South Portland defeated Thornton Academy 6-1 to claim its third consecutive title. Ben Conti and Griffin Kelley combined for a three-hitter, and Sam Troiano hit two triples and scored twice for the Red Riots.

South Portland beat Portland 2-0 and Thornton Academy downed Scarborough 3-2 in the semifinals.

GOLF

MAINE HOF: The Maine Golf Hall of Fame will induct three new members Sept. 8 at the Poland Spring Resort.

Brian Bickford, Leslie Guenther and Forrest Tyson will be honored.

Bickford has been head pro and director of golf at Val Halla Golf Course since 2004. He also has coached high school teams at Yarmouth and Greely, and has remained active in youth programs.

Guenther is a three-time Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association champion who also won the Women’s Maine State Golf Association amateur championship in 2014.

Tyson, who will be honored posthumously, won the Maine Open in 1926 and was the runner-up in 1925. He was the fourth president of the Maine State Golf Association.
