A tiny community in Sagadahoc County is going to celebrate a big day in its history on Sunday.
Georgetown, which is home to Reid State Park, will hold its 300th birthday party. The party will be held at the Georgetown Historical Society, 20 Bay Point Road, from 1-3 p.m.
Georgetown was incorporated on June 13, 1716. Its population is just over 1,000, according to the latest U.S. Census figures.
The party will feature cake, ice cream, music, storytelling and a few speeches. A time capsule will also be unveiled on Sunday, but items for the capsule will continue to be collected throughout the summer.
Jeanne Bailey McGowan, a spokeswoman for the Historical Society, said Sunday’s party will kick off several weeks of events related to Georgetown’s Tricentennial.
On June 26, author Eve LaPlante, who owns a home in Georgetown, will be the guest speaker at the Historical Society’s annual meeting. LaPlante’s ancestor, Samuel Sewall, convicted more than 30 people of witchcraft in the late 1600s.
On August 20, the Historical Society will conduct tours of the town’s historic sites.
