Finalists set for Winkin Mr. Baseball award

Nine finalists have been announced for the John Winkin Mr. Baseball Award, given to the top senior player in Maine. The winner will be announced June 24 at Colby College.

The finalists are:

Trevor Delaite, Bangor pitcher; Ben Lambert, Thornton Academy pitcher/outfielder; Connor Aube, Falmouth outfielder; Ryan Sinclair, Hall-Dale infielder; Nick Mazurek, Oceanside pitcher/third baseman; Cody Lawyerson, Valley pitcher; Nick Guerette, Hermon pitcher/infielder; Roderick Maynard, Sacopee Valley pitcher; Thomas Spencer, Penobscot Valley pitcher/infielder.

The winner will be announced between the senior all-star games. The Class C/D North vs. South all-star game will start at 3 p.m. and the Class A/B North vs. South all-star game will begin after the presentation.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Paige Daigle scored three goals and Amanda Gagne added a pair as the No. 1 Morse girls’ lacrosse team edged No. 4 Gardiner (8-6) 8-4 in a Class B North girls lacrosse semifinal.

The Shipbuilders (13-1) will play the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 3 Yarmouth and No. 2 St. Dominic, in the regular final.

TENNIS

MERCEDES CUP: Top-seeded Roger Federer cruised in the tiebreakers to beat German qualifier Florian Mayer 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1) for a place in the semifinals at Stuttgart, Germany.

His next opponent will be rising star and third-seeded Dominic Thiem, of Austria, who rallied to beat Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Philipp Kohlschreiber beat qualifier Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5 and will face Juan Martin del Potro in the other semifinal.

BASKETBALL

OLYMPICS: Russell Westbrook said he won’t play in the Olympics, leaving the U.S. basketball team without another of its best players.

Westbrook, a first-team All-NBA selection, won gold medals with the U.S. in the 2012 Olympics and 2010 world basketball championship.

OBITUARY: Brooks Thompson, a first-round NBA draft pick and former Texas-San Antonio men’s basketball coach, has died. He was 45.

BASEBALL

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Tom Fortier had two hits and four RBI to lead Edge Academy to an 11-7 win over On Target Utility Services at Southern Maine Community College.

Devin Butler hit a two-run single as part of a four-run fifth inning to lead On Target.

NECBL: Ako Thomas went 2 for 3 with two RBI and the Sanford Mainers (1-1) scored four runs in the fifth for a 5-1 win over the Ocean State Waves (1-1) at Old Mountain Field in South Kingston, Rhode Island,

Shaine Hughes and Nelson Mompierre each hit RBI singles in the four-run outburst.

Jordan Carr picked up the win for Sanford allowing one run on four hits in five innings.

EMPIRE LEAGUE: Joshua Martinez went 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead the Surge (5-3) over the Wild (1-6) in a 14-11 win in Old Orchard Beach.

Chris Allen added three hits, including two doubles, for Old Orchard.

COLLEGES

BASEBALL: Johnny Ruiz hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the eighth inning, to lead Miami to a 12-7 victory over Boston College in the first game of their best-of-three series at Coral Gables, Florida.

Scarborough graduate Joe Cronin was 1 for 4 with an RBI double for Boston College.
