U-Haul Company of Maine has opened a new store and company office in Brunswick, inside the former Arrow-Hart Corp. electrical equipment plant.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Arrow Hart, at 1 Cressey Road, began offering truck and trailer rentals and moving supplies Monday, according to a company news release. The company said it closed on the 186,300-square-foot property on May 13.

U-Haul International spokeswoman Andrea Batchelor said the facility will employ up to 25 full-time and part-time workers.

“This building sat empty for more than five years,” U-Haul Company of Maine President Jon Hynes said in the release. “The manufacturing plant had been around for more than 35 years. It’s the largest building in the area, so it’s important it doesn’t become an eyesore.”

An online listing for the property by broker Larry Cilley of the Maine Real Estate Network included a list price of $3.7 million for the building and its surrounding 18 acres.

The purchase of the former Arrow-Hart facility was driven by a company sustainability initiative that supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, according to the U-Haul release. Adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, it said.

In addition to the fleet of equipment now available for the summer moving season, the Brunswick location soon will offer professional hitch installation, propane, portable moving and self-storage containers, U-Haul said. By late summer, 500 storage units will be available for U-Haul customers.
