Scarborough voters solidly approved a $47.5 million school budget on Tuesday for 2016-17 that’s $2.3 million or 5 percent higher than the current spending plan.

The vote was 1,972 to 1,544, with 3,517 or 22 percent of 15,734 active registered voters turning out at the polls, according to Town Clerk Tody Justice.

The municipal, school and county budget proposals total $82 million, which is $3.8 million or 4.9 percent higher than the fiscal year ending June 30. The total amount to be raised through property taxes is $60.6 million, which is a $3 million or 5.2 percent increase.

Town officials say they believe the tax rate would increase about 41 cents, or 2.65 percent, from $15.49 to $15.90 per $1,000 of assessed property value. At that rate, the annual tax bill on a $300,000 home would increase $123, from $4,647 to $4,770.

The vote was 2,334 to 1,134 to continue holding annual school budget referendums for the next three years.
