Sebago uses big inning for American Legion win

Devon Butler laced a bases-loaded triple as the Sebago Lakers broke open a 1-1 game with five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 12-2 five-inning American Legion win over Summit Gas at Yarmouth on Monday.

The Lakers’ offense kicked in the 10-run rule with a six-run fifth, keyed by Roderick Maynard’s three-run double.

n Griffin Watson doubled home three runs as Coastal Landscape (2-0) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth inning of a 6-0 win against the Sebago Lakers on Sunday at Standish.

Tanner Laberge had pitched five innings of no-hit ball for Sebago before leaving with an injury.

EURO 2016: Gareth Bale made it three goals in three games as Wales overwhelmed Russia 3-0 at Toulouse, France, to reach the knockout stages of the European Championship for the first time.

Playing in its first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup, Wales defied expectations to win Group B ahead of England and send Russia home with an impressive counterattacking display.

n England qualified for the round of 16 after being held to a 0-0 draw by Slovakia on a frustrating night for Roy Hodgson’s team at Saint-Etienne, France.

TENNIs

EASTBOURNE INTERNATIONAL: Russian former champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina moved into the second round at England.

Makarova fought off five first-set points to beat British wild card Tara Moore 7-5, 6-4, and 2013 winner Vesnina beat Britain’s Heather Watson 6-2, 6-3.

There were also victories for Germany’s Andrea Petkovic, who overcame the challenge of China’s Saisai Zheng to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, and Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, who dismissed American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-2.

NOTTINGHAM OPEN: Former top-10 player Mikhail Youzhny won an ATP main draw opening match for only the fifth time this year in Nottingham, England.

Youzhny beat Teymuraz Gabashvili of Ukraine 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Other first-round winners included Evgeny Donskoy, Adrian Mannarino and Daniel Evans.

COLLEGES

WORLD SERIES: Pinch-hitter Ryan Cumberland’s two-run single broke a tie and Noah Davis and Kyle Nelson combined to hold down No. 3 national seed Miami’s offense in UC Santa Barbara’s 5-3 victory in a College World Series elimination game at Omaha, Nebraska. This is the first CWS appearance for the Gauchos (43-19-1).

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has won the George Halas Award for overcoming adversity to succeed.

The Professional Football Writers of America honored Berry on Monday. Berry, the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year, overcame a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2014 to return to the field and have an All-Pro season in 2015.

TRACK AND FIELD

ARRESTED: Jama Alden, coach of world 1,500-meter champion Genzebe Dibaba and other long-distance runners, was arrested near Barcelona after Spanish police raided his hotel room and found traces of EPO and other banned substances. Police said Aden and his trainer were arrested on charges of administering and distributing doping substances and endangering public health.
