I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed by Christopher Hoppin, retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, in his June 10 letter to the editor (“D-Day barely mentioned in newspaper on June 6 anniversary”) regarding the lack of coverage commemorating D-Day on June 6.

That the state’s most prominent news publication could relegate one of the century’s two most world-changing events to one sentence in “Today’s Almanac” and one in the “Peanuts” cartoon strip fills my heart with a sadness that I cannot find the words to express.

What deepens this sadness even further is that one week later, the Portland Press Herald dedicated 20 square inches, plus or minus, of Page A3 space to the auction of a flag from that fateful day.

Please, I beg of you, never again forget the soldiers who fought and died that day.

Never again.
