A recount will be conducted in the closely-contested Republican primary, with the winner to face Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree in November.

The Maine Secretary of State’s Office declared that Mark Holbrook of Brunswick had defeated Ande Smith of North Yarmouth by 55 votes, out of nearly 21,000 cast in Maine’s 1st Congressional District.

Smith requested a recount, which on Wednesday the Secretary of State’s Office granted, and scheduled it for 9 a.m. June 28 in the Florian Room of the Maine Department of Public Safety in Brunswick.

Smith and Holbrook competed in a lively campaign in a district that has typically sent a Democrat to the House of Representatives.

Smith is an attorney and former nuclear engineer while Holbrook is a professional counselor.
