Maine’s annual bear hunt is getting closer as hunters get ready to drop doughnuts in the woods to lure the animals into the line of fire.

Maine’s bear hunt takes place in the late summer and early fall, but hunters can start placing bait in three weeks, on July 30. The hunting season then follows from Aug. 29 to Nov. 26.

The bear hunting season for hunters who use bait ends early – on Sept. 24. There is also a season for hunting bears with dogs that runs from Sept. 12 to Oct. 28, and a trapping season from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.

Hunters are limited to two bears per year. One can be taken by hunting and the other by trapping.
