While I commend the writing of the July 10 article on scythes (“An ancient tool, the scythe is also a fit for modern times”), I must take issue with the accompanying photographs. No operator of a scythe should be barefoot!
The hedgers and ditchers in the north of England, with whom I first learned the art of scything, insisted on high, strong leather boots for all, to avoid cutting the feet in the swinging blade.
