Yankee Ford, featuring players from Cape Elizabeth and South Portland, won the recent American Legion state championship in Augusta, beating Coffee News of Bangor, 5-4, in the title game. Yankee Ford advanced to take part in the regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

“I couldn’t be happier for the kids and coaching staff,” said coach Andy Wood. “It’s been a fun year and we weren’t ready for it to end yet.

“It also happened to be Brendan Horton’s birthday,” said Wood, referring to the former South Portland football, hockey and baseball standout who succumbed to cancer in early March. Brendan Horton’s brother, Caden Horton, and his cousin, Alex Livingston, are on the team and his uncle, Todd Livingston, is an assistant coach.

“I think we had a little help from Brendan for sure,” said Wood.
