History Barn welcomes the public

The next monthly New Gloucester History Barn Open House will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. The “Did You Know?” exhibit will be featured. The barn is located at 383 Intervale Road, New Gloucester. Admission is free.

Rain or Shine Club

The Royal River Conservation Trust will host an upcoming Rain or Shine Club at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Intervale Preserve, Route 231, New Gloucester. To pinpoint the location, the GPS address is 642 Intervale Road – near a railroad crossing. Ample parking is available on the wide grassy shoulder of the road.

This small preserve on the banks of the Royal River includes a short loop hike with four unique art installations, each of which can be found using the RRCT’s Royal Treasure Map designed for kids. Each sculpture helps interpret the ecology, history and natural dynamics of the preserve. Treasure maps and crayons to mark the spots on the maps will be supplied. Free hard cider tasting and barbecue

Visit Norumbega Cidery, one of southern Maine’s newest hard cider businesses. See firsthand how hard cider is made, where it is bottled, and learn about the particular apple varieties used to make this traditional beverage.

The Norumbega Cidery will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Sample all of Norumbega hard ciders – classic, honey or berry – plus test and pick your favorite from this year’s special batches. Also, enjoy barbecue and lawn games while you sip. They’ll have bottles for sale to take home with you, too.

Hard cider played a strong part in the history and traditions of rural Maine and is making a comeback as an option for those interested in locally brewed and produced beverages. Family Night and Ice Cream Social

Come to a festive evening under the big tent at Pineland Farms, from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, held rain or shine. Les Bijoux (The Jewels) will be playing folk music for guests to dance along to. Bring a picnic for a fun night out for the whole family. There will also be plenty of ice cream to go around.

Shaker-style seat weaving workshop

For more than 200 years, the Shakers have seated their chairs and stools with woven cloth tape – a classic Shaker feature that is colorful, comfortable and durable. Local instructor and Shaker enthusiast Sandy MacDonald will explain the history of Shaker chairs using original, historic examples along with contemporary replicas on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Learn the methods, tips and techniques to weaving Shaker chair and stool seat patterns. Restore your favorite chair or stool in classic style. Note that the chair or stool must have rounded seat rails. Materials list and resource list will be provided at sign-up. Participants are required to purchase Shaker tape prior to the workshop – suggested online sources are V.I. Reed & Co., the Basket Makers Catalog and Shaker Workshops.

The workshop occurs at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, 707 Shaker Road, New Gloucester. The fee is $50, and pre-registration is required. Register online at www.maineshakers.com, or by phone at 926-4597.

Donate school supplies

Karen Fuller and Mark Morrison, who are Edward Jones associates, are launching a campaign soliciting donations of school supplies to provide to SAD 15 students in need. Residents and business owners of Gray and New Gloucester are being asked to donate school supplies toward this effort.

A donation box has been set up at the Edward Jones office located at 2 McConkey Road, Suite 2, Gray. Items can be dropped off during normal business hours from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays. Examples of donated items include notebooks, writing instruments and tissues. Keep in mind that they cannot accept cash or checks.
