PORTLAND (AP) — The Maine Department of Education will receive a federal grant to help subsidize the cost of Advanced Placement tests for low-income high school students.

The grant is for about $67,000 and it is coming from the U.S. Department of Education through its Advanced Placement Test Fee Program.

U.S. Sens. Angus King, an independent, and Susan Collins, a Republican, say the grant will reduce the cost of more than 1,700 AP exams for low-income students around the state.

The Advanced Placement Test Fee Program is designed to boost the number of low-income students who can take the AP test. Most U.S. colleges grant credit for AP scores.
