YORK COUNTY — York County Sheriff’s deputies and area police are seeking to talk to a ‘person of interest’ in connection with the discovery of “skimming” devices found on ATMS in Sanford, Waterboro and Wells early Saturday.
In a social media posting, sheriff’s deputies said the devices are sophisticated and the skimmers used two of them to capture the PIN and card data of unsuspecting customers. One device was a fake card slot that fit over the existing slot, and so the machine looked unaltered. Another device was a small camera hidden above the keypad that captured the PIN.
“We believe the thieves planned to burn the data onto a blank card to access the victim’s funds,” deputies said in the posting.
Sheriff William King on Satirday night said Sanford Institution for Savings branches in south Sanford near the roundabout, on Route 5 in Waterboro and on Route 1 in Wells were targeted.
Bank employees found the device at the Waterboro location early Saturday morning. Law enforcement and bank security officials worked quickly to check existing ATM machines in the area.
As of 5 p.m. Saturday, no customers had reported that their funds were accessed.
The individual in the accompanying photos is considered a person of interest and police are asking that if anyone knows the identity of the individual or has information about the skimming operation to contact their nearest law enforcement agency.
Deputies offered few tips from banking security experts regarding ATM machine use:
1. Cover your PIN with your hand when you enter it.
2. Use familiar ATM machines and limit your visits
3. Check your balances frequently
4. Inspect the ATM – if something looks out of place, do not use it and alert bank officials.
