GORHAM — Austin Bell scored in the 74th minute to lift St. Joseph’s to a 1-0 men’s soccer win over Southern Maine on Sunday.

With the win, the Monks improve to 9-1-2 while the Huskies fall to 1-7-3.

Simon Hulbert had nine saves for the Huskies, who were outshot 24-3 by St. Joseph’s.

AMHERST 4, BATES 0: Christopher Martin and Bryce Ciambella each scored goals during a four-minute stretch midway through the first half to give the Purple & White (7-1-1, 3-1-1) the lead as they downed the Bobcats (3-5-2, 1-5-1) in a NESCAC game at Amherst, Massachusetts.

Robbie Montanaro finished with six saves for the Bobcats.

MAINE-MACHIAS 3, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 1: Lorenzo Seguar scored his second goal of the game to break a 1-1 tie midway through the second half to lift the Clippers (7-3, 5-0) to a win over the Seawolves (5-3-1, 3-2) in a YSCC game at South Portland.

Gradi Lapika scored for the Seawolves 6:04 into the second half off an assist from Douglas Cloutier to tie the game at 1-1.

Haidar Al-Freihy added one goal and two assists for the Clippers.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UMBC 3, MAINE 0: Wren Aye headed in a cross from Alexa Quaranta to break a scoreless tie in the 54th minute as the Retrievers (6-4, 2-1) pulled away from the Black Bears (5-7, 1-2) for an America East win at Baltimore.

AMHERST 3, BATES 0: Two early goals helped the Purple & White (6-2-1, 3-1-1) earn a NESCAC win over the Bobcats (2-7-1, 0-6-1) at Amherst, Massachusetts.

Sarah McCarthy finished with 11 saves for the Bobcats.

Taylor Currier scored the lone goal for the Seawolves.

Aisling Farragher-Gemma made 10 saves for the Clippers, who were outshot, 20-11.

FIELD HOCKEY

ST. JOSEPH’S 5, CASTLETON STATE 0: Kelsey Dumond scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Monks (4-5) as they shut out the Spartans (3-8) at Standish.

Maddy Beaulieu, Hayley Winslow and Kara Kelly each added a goal for the Monks, who led 1-0 at halftime.

Kaylin Mansir and Megan Baker combined for one save to record the shutout.

COLBY 4, HUSSON 2: McKayla Blanch collected one goal and two assists as the Mules (3-6) built a 4-0 lead and held off the Eagles (4-4) at Waterville.

Meredith Keenan, Merrill Read and Kallie Hutchinson added one goal apiece for the Mules.

Kerianne Downing and Arika Brochu each scored a goal for Husson.

TRINITY 3, UNE 2: Kelcie Finn scored with 7:09 left in the game to lift the Bantams (8-1) to a win over the Nor’easters (9-2) at Hartford, Connecticut.

The Bantams took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Chandler Solimine.

Vonde Saunders responded for the Nor’easters in the 39th minute, then assisted on the equalizer by Bridget Cavanaugh 11 minutes later.

UNE keeper Holly Smith made 11 saves.

ALBANY 3, MAINE 1: Paula Heuser scored two goals to lead the Great Danes (7-4, 2-0) to an America East win over the Black Bears (8-4, 1-1) at Orono.

Maine’s Brianna Ricker scored off a rebound with 11:37 left.

MEN’S HOCKEY

ST. FRANCIS XAVIER 6, MAINE 5: The X-Men erased a 3-0 first-period deficit to rally past the Black Bears in a season-opening exhibition game at Orono.

The Black Bears built a first- period lead on goals by Nolan Vesey, Jake Pappalardo and Eric Schurhamer. The X-Men then scored four straight goals in the second period to take the lead for good.

Chase Pearson added Maine’s last goal, scoring with 20 seconds left in the game.
