Every day, we hear sad, horrific news about bomb explosions or of people who walk into malls or restaurants or movies and shoot completely innocent people who are just going about their daily lives and who fall victim just for being there at the wrong time.

Today I would like to write about people who actually save lives and make the world a much better place to live: the Cumberland Fire Department emergency medical technicians.

They transported my dad back and forth to dialysis by ambulance – over 800 trips at that. They made numerous trips to my parents’ house in emergency situations – life-saving emergency situations.

They made phone calls to check on my dad when my mother, who had been my dad’s primary caretaker, passed away a year ago. These people have gone above and beyond, not just for my own parents but also for the entire community.

My father passed away Sept. 2, and we were honored to have the Cumberland Fire Department attend and share at the service. One of the young girls said she actually looked forward to getting up at 5:30 a.m. to transport my dad and to see his smile and wave.

In a world of bad news, it would be nice to focus on some good news. Some wonderful people out there work daily and devote their lives to making other people feel loved, respected, cared for and safe. In memory of my father, Samuel Kamin, we will be forever grateful.
