All of Haiti needs immediate help, but one place in particular has a Maine connection. That is the farming village of Pwoje Espwa, near Les Cayes, where the Rev. Marc Boisvert, a revered Catholic priest from Lewiston, started a school for orphan children.

The earthquake in 2010 was a brutal time for them and they have never fully recovered. Now the massive Hurricane Matthew has destroyed most of their school facilities. Right now, the desperate need is to house and feed the more than 200 children and the rest of the school family.

Father Marc and his volunteer workers are one of the bright lights of hope in Haiti. To survive the aftermath of this deadly storm and bring safety to the children of Pwoje Espwa is their most important goal. This is their Aleppo.

Along with the lack of food and clean water and shelter, there is the grave threat of a repeated outbreak of the cholera and typhoid that ravaged Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

As we watch in horror the unfolding disaster in Aleppo, Syria, and see the hesitation of the world to help those victims of regime violence, we know that those in Father Marc’s care can be helped by us now.

Father Marc has said that the best and most direct way to help is to make a direct donation to Free the Kids Inc.

Free the Kids is on the internet, and to support Father Marc in his magnificent work would a blessing on all of us.
