BIDDEFORD — Firefighters from Biddeford’s Company C and students from the University of New England recently assisted the American Red Cross on Saturday by going to homes across the city checking smoke alarms and providing fire safety tips to homeowners.

The effort was part of Biddeford’s partnership with the Red Cross to promote fire safety, the third time it’s done so since 2014. Firefighters and students installed or replaced a total of 70 smoke alarms on Saturday. According to the Fire Department, 111 lives nationwide have been saved since the program’s inception, and 499,803 smoke alarms have been installed across the country.
