Police have identified the man killed in a crash Thursday night in North Berwick as 25-year-old Alexander Holland.

Holland, who lived in North Berwick, was driving a 2005 Mercedes station wagon on Route 4 when he crashed into a tree near Elm Street and Cahoon Lane. Holland was ejected from his car and died at the scene, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and are trying to determine if Holland was wearing a seatbelt, said Chief Stephen Peasley. He said there is no indication alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

“It was raining quite heavily at the time. That may have played a part,” Peasley said. “We are also considering speed as a factor.”

The road was shut down for several hours after the crash.
