Question 5 asks voters in Maine to choose whether or not to change to a so-called ranked-choice system. If we are dissatisfied with the current system, a logical alternative would be a runoff election.
I object to a runoff election because of the likelihood that some voters would not be able to vote in the runoff. I have a daughter in the Navy, serving on a destroyer located overseas. Would she be able to request, receive and return a ballot in time to be counted? What if her ship is deployed for a week or a month?
Are we, as a society, comfortable with making a member of our military unable to cast a vote? I am 100 percent unwilling to do that.
Please vote “yes” with me on Question 5.
