Ho, Ho, Ho, Boys and Girls of Portland,

Mrs. Claus and I have some serious concerns about the environment. It’s getting much less icy up here, so our winter wonderland is changing.

Can you help us? This year, we’d like you to leave out a bunch of pillowcases and sheets (along with the snacks for Rudolph and me). Instead of wrapping, we will put most of your presents in pillowcases and under sheets.

Here is a report from my research elves: In the U.S., annual trash from gift wrap and shopping bags totals 4 million tons. Half the paper consumed is used to wrap and decorate consumer products. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high. That’s a lot of trees!

Using less paper and creating less waste is one easy way to try to keep our beautiful planet healthy. (My wrapping elves will also be grateful for the break.) This will seem different from the brightly colored presents you are used to, but the sacrifice is worth it.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a healthy planet!
