Kudos to Pamela Ballinger for her well-written opinion piece (“Maine Voices: Mainers should shun reviled Briton who campaigned for Brexit,” Dec. 13). However, more emphasis was needed with regards to why Nigel Farage is so objectionable.

His UK Independence Party is a thinly disguised white nationalist party in the United Kingdom. I had the misfortune of being in England before the Brexit vote, and it was distressing to see the campaign fought along anti-immigrant lines with support from the National Alliance, a U.S.-based neo-Nazi group. There was plenty to criticize about the European Union without resorting to bigotry.

Then, when asked by an ITV reporter if the money that Britain had been sending to the EU was going to go instead to the national socialized health system, as promised by his campaign, Mr. Farage replied that it wasn’t, and that his campaign had in effect lied when it promised voters that the money would help the health system.

That is precisely why Mr. Farage is so intensely disliked. The British do not like dishonesty or betrayal of promises; sadly, they are going to pay a high price for having voted for Brexit.
