SANFORD — Sanford hosted Bonny Eagle for a successful home swim meet for the boys and girls team, winning 122-39 on the girls side and 111-28 for the boys.

The cherry on top of Sanford winning its first home meet is that the girls team broke a Sanford High School record in the girls 200 yard freestyle relay, at 1:51.39. The 12-year record Lily Denham, Tiffany Twombly, Pearl Frohloff and Delaney Tanguay broke was 1:51.51, set in 2006 by Katie Bordeau, Amelia Stucker, Barbara Milo, and Jenni Roberts, an Olympic trial level swimmer.

Senior swim captain and record-breaker Lily Dunham said, “I’m so excited. It’s just great to see all our hard work paying off, especially this early in the season. We’re definitely going to break this record again and hopefully we’ll break more records. My goal is to keep working hard and swim fast.”

Bonny Eagle swim is pleased to be improving. Bonny Eagle Head swim coach Morgan Gryskwicz said, “They did very well. Their times keep dropping. This is their second meet and every meet throughout the season they keep dropping seconds. We’d love to makes states. We’re seconds away from making it.”

Strong signs that Sanford swim will have a fortunate future aren’t limited to just record setting. The enthusiasm is contagious as the swim community gather inside the tropical shelter of the Sanford Springvale YMCA on a subzero Friday evening.

Sanford head swim coach Scott Keeney said, “we’ve got a strong group of girls. We’ve had a huge girls team. For the first home meet of the year to win the record is amazing. Our goal is to win Southwesterns and we’re going to give it our best shot.”

The Sanford bench is deep with supportive and motivational coaching staff, as well as a well-stocked and very present fan base.

Shaina Morrow, the assistant coach of Sanford swim said, “I’m super proud of the girls. They really worked together as a team. The record before was really strong. They had a strong team before and it was really cool to see our girls rise to the occasion and really believe to themselves. That was the most important thing. They had the skill all along but it was believing that they could do it.”

In the boys events, Sanford’s Scully Mason won the 50 yard freestyle at 25.06. Sanford’s David Winchell III won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.87. Abraham Phillips cleared the 500 yard freestyle, earning a time of 7:06.09.
