After reading the recently published Stateline.org article “Curb elderly drivers? Not so fast” (Dec. 25), I was very impressed by the actions that many states are taking to ensure that elderly drivers are able to keep their licenses. However, I believe that the article understated the concerns that brought about the reason for any of these restrictions.

The age restrictions imposed on elderly drivers are there to keep them, and others on the road, safe. However, safety concerns are not limited to those above a certain age. This brings up the issue of ageism, and whether measures being taken to keep the roads safe should be imposed on all groups. While a license renewal requiring a road test is inconvenient, the roads would be much safer for it.
