I appreciated the Press Herald’s focus on Alzheimer’s disease in its recent editorial (“Our View: Research only way to ease rising cost of Alzheimer’s,” Jan. 3).

Alzheimer’s affects millions of Americans and costs us hundreds of billions of dollars per year. The human toll and economic costs are only expected to increase.

I am glad to know that Sen. Susan Collins is leading the charge on this issue. Her legislation creating a national plan to combat Alzheimer’s gives us an achievable goal to conqueror this disease. Sen. Collins understands the fact that we must make investments in biomedical research now to reap dividends in the future.

Sen. Collins is a true ally to families like mine who have experienced the pain of dementia and Alzheimer’s. With her advocacy, I am confident that we are close to putting an end to this horrible disease.
