ORONO — Blaine Byron had a goal and an assist, and Rob McGovern stopped 44 shots Saturday night to lead the University of Maine men’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over Massachusetts at Alfond Arena.

The Black Bears, after beating UMass on consecutive nights, improved to 10-13-3 overall and 4-9-1 in Hockey East. The Minutemen dipped to 2-11-1.

Byron scored his 12th goal, assisted by Cam Brown and Brendan Robbins, with 4:46 left in the first period, then assisted on Rob Michel’s goal 4:32 into the second. It was Michel’s seventh goal.

Jake Horton scored midway through the third period for the Minutemen.

McGovern stopped 19 shots in the second period.

Nic Renyard made 20 saves for UMass.

BABSON 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Matt McMorrow scored the winning goal 12 minutes into the second period as Babson (12-7-2, 9-4-1 New England Hockey) edged USM (7-11-2, 4-9-1) at Gorham.

Alex Pantalone gave Southern Maine a short-lived 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 14:49 into the game.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 7, COLBY 2: Andrew Slotnick scored two goals and Brady Fleurent added a goal and two assists as the Nor’easters (10-6-2) defeated the Mules (7-5-4) at Biddeford.

Trevor Fleurent, Ryan Bloom, Blaise Healy and Armand Uomoleale also scored for UNE, which built a 5-0 lead before Michael Rudolf and Mario Benicky scored consecutive goals in the third period for Colby.

BASKETBALL

COLBY 87, BOWDOIN 82: Patrick Stewart scored 18 of his 28 points in the second half as Colby (9-9, 1-5 NESCAC) defeated Bowdoin (9-9, 1-5) at Waterville.

Colby took a 30-15 lead with 5:45 left in the first half, but Bowdoin finished the half on a 17-9 run to pull within 39-32. Jack Bors, who scored a team-high 24 points, and David Reynolds combined to score 19 points off the bench in the first half for Bowdoin. Reynolds finished with 16.

Colby led 66-61 with 4:41 left, but Bors hit two 3-pointers in 40 seconds to cut it to 68-67.

A three-point play by Sam Jefferson pushed Colby’s lead to 71-67 with 3:18 left and the Mules extended it to 80-72 with 1:03 to play.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 82, SOUTHERN MAINE 62: Jauch Green and Rashard Rodriguez combined for 19 points to push the Colonials (12-7, 4-5 Little East) to a 36-29 halftime lead, then combined for 19 more in the second half against Southern Maine (7-12, 2-7) in Danbury, Connecticut.

Rodriguez finished with 22 points and Green scored 16. Aaron Samuel added 13 and Bobby Bynum finished with 11.

James Starks III and Zach Teal had 14 each and Jacob Littlefield added 10 for the Huskies.

ST. JOSEPH’S 95, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 90: Marc Corey scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers in 2:02 to power an 18-7 surge that helped the Monks (11-8, 8-4 Great Northeast Athletic) take control against Albertus Magnus (14-4, 10-2), at Standish.

The Falcons cut a 71-59 deficit to three on Grant Ellis’ 3-pointer with five seconds to play, but Ian Mileikis followed with a pair of free throws for St. Joseph’s.

DEAN 89, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 70: Dayvon Russell scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Bulldogs (12-9) beat the SeaWolves (17-5) at South Portland.

The Bulldogs trailed 38-31 at halftime but started the second half on a 16-9 run to make it 47-47 with 16:10 left. Russell then scored 13 points over the next 12 minutes to give Dean an 83-63 lead with 4:04 left.

BATES 84, TUFTS 72: Marcus Delpeche scored nine of his 28 points as the Bobcats (14-6, 4-3 NESCAC) closed the first half with a 17-7 run to take a 39-31 lead over Tufts (16-3, 6-1) at Lewiston.

The Jumbos got no closer than seven points in the second half.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 73, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 64: Jean Luc-Parker scored 21 points for the Nor’easters (6-13, 4-8 Commonwealth Coast), but the Golden Bears (4-14, 3-9) used an 11-3 run midway through the second half to get the win at Medford, Massachusetts.

UNE trailed 51-48, but Mike Pettway scored six points to spark the run that gave Western New England a 62-51 lead with 5:02 left.

INDOOR TRACK

PENN STATE: Isaiah Harris, a sophomore from Lewiston, posted the second-fastest 600-meter time ever while Cas Loxsom broke the world record at State College, Pennsylvania.

Loxsom finished in 1 minute, 14.91 seconds, lowering the mark of 1:14.97 set eight days earlier by Emmanuel Korir of Kenya, a freshman at Texas-El Paso.

Harris was clocked in 1:14.96.
