Credit union sponsors financial fair for students

New Dimensions Federal Credit Union recently gave a Financial Fitness Fair at Messalonskee High School in Oakland.

The mission was to provide education on financial security and basic real-life budgeting concepts for some 720 students. Participants chose a profession, were assigned an annual salary and credit score, then visited several booths such as housing, furnishings, credit cards, autos, student loan debt, and more.

The students were given real-life curveballs such as speeding tickets and cellphone repairs and had to come back with a balanced budget.

Two libraries given $1,000 for youth literacy programs

The Rotary Club of South Portland/Cape Elizabeth has donated $1,000 to two local public libraries for youth literacy programs.

Youth librarians at Cape’s Thomas Memorial Library and the South Portland Public Library each received $500. The additional materials, chosen by the librarians at each library, will provide materials they otherwise would not be able to purchase through normal funding.

Coast Guard Auxiliary installs new officers

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Saco Bay Flotilla recently met to install new officers for 2017. Amanda Ruel of Biddeford was sworn in as flotilla commander, and Sean Skillings of Milton, N.H., was sworn in as vice flotilla commander.

The annual change of watch is the CG Auxiliary equivalent of the Coast Guard’s change of command, and is the official transfer of responsibility from old to new leadership.

The ceremony is part of a formal dinner and swearing-in of the new officers and includes the presentation of awards. U.S.C.G. Sector Northern New England commanding officer Capt. Michael Baroody, and Chief of Prevention Cmdr. John Humpage also attended.

Secondhand Book Shop opens at its new location

The Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop will open at its new waterfront location Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The new address is at 17 Backstreet Landing (behind Elm Street Plaza).

Donated books may be left at the Backstreet shop whenever a volunteer is there to receive them.

The shop will be open 9 to 4, Monday through Saturday except Thursdays, when it will stay open until 7.

The book shop is a major source of income for Skidompha Public Library. All items are donated, all staff members are volunteers, and all proceeds go to the library.

Therapeutic riding center names board members

The Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center has appointed new officers and members to its board of directors.

New members are Bo Bigelow of Murray Plumb and Murray, Mary Lynn Engel of Saint Joseph’s College and Allan Shepard of IBEW 567.

Officers elected for 2017 are Steve Flynn, president; Kate Jeton, vice president; Janis Childs, secretary; and David Shorette, treasurer.

Other members are Linda Baker, Eileen Chretien, Cynthia Cyr and Emily Dickinson Leete.

Hair Designs raises $1,250 for breast care programs

On the Go Hair Designs raised $1,250 during their 5th annual Cut-A-Thon in support of the Center for Breast Care at Southern Maine Health Care.

The funding will be used by the center to offer educational materials, social work services, programs such as yoga and other complementary therapies and services that would otherwise not be provided.

Education foundation gives $10,000 to STEM Academy

The Biddeford Education Foundation’s board of directors voted to contribute $10,000 to the Biddeford School Department’s STEM Academy. The foundation’s mission is to provide resources outside the normal school budget to augment teaching, encourage academic excellence, and maximize opportunities for students K-12.

The STEM Academy provides students a project-based, student-centered pathway for those interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
