SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jayson Tatum had 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, Grayson Allen scored 21 points and No. 21 Duke beat No. 20 Notre Dame 84-74 on Monday night.
Luke Kennard and Matt Jones each added 16 points for the Blue Devils (17-5, 5-4 ACC), who strung together consecutive wins for the first time since the first week of January.
This was also the Blue Devils’ second win since being banned from their locker room by Coach Mike Krzyzewski last week. Jeff Capel is 3-3 as interim coach for Krzyzewski, who is still recovering following back surgery.
Duke leaned heavily on its starting five, getting all but six points from that group, with Kennard and Amile Jefferson fouling out. The teams combined for 48 fouls and 52 free throws.
V.J. Beachem scored 20 points and Bonzie Colson had 17 points and nine rebounds for Notre Dame (17-6, 6-4), which has lost three straight.
After the Irish cut Duke’s lead to six, Jones responded with a three-point play and scored five of the next seven points to push Duke ahead 63-50 with 9:34 left.
The Irish weren’t done yet, running off 12 straight points to cut the lead to one with 6:25 to go, but again the Devils responded, with Allen hitting a 3-pointer and a pull-up jumper from atop the key.
That sparked an 11-2 run that again pushed the Devils lead to double digits with 2:29 left.
NOTES
POLL: The lone remaining unbeaten team in Division I, Gonzaga moved to No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll for the second time in school history.
Gonzaga is the fifth team to reach No. 1 this season joining Duke, Kentucky, Villanova and Baylor.
Baylor (20-1), one of the three top 10 teams to not lose, jumped from fifth to second.
KANSAS: Forward Carlton Bragg was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and remained suspended indefinitely from the third-ranked Jayhawks.
Lawrence court administrator Vicki Stanwix confirmed that Bragg was given a notice to appear in court after police said they found two glass smoking devices with residue inside.
XAVIER: Point guard Edmond Sumner will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.
An MRI exam confirmed a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was hurt during an 82-77 victory over St. John’s a day earlier, in which he had 17 points and seven assists for the Musketeers (15-6, 5-3 Big East).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
TENNESSEE 76, (4) SOUTH CAROLINA 74: Jamie Nared had a career high 27 points including two tie-breaking free throws with 5.9 seconds left to help Tennessee end South Carolina’s 29-game home win streak in the Southeastern Conference.
Nared was fouled after the Gamecocks (18-2, 8-1 SEC) rallied from 11 points down in the final six minutes to tie the game at 74 on Bianca Cuevas-Moore’s 3-pointer with 14.7 seconds left.
POLL: UConn still sits at No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll after cruising to two more easy victories.
The Huskies (20-0) have won an NCAA record 95 consecutive games and visit Temple on Wednesday before hosting Tulsa on Sunday.
Following UConn is Baylor, Maryland, South Carolina and Mississippi State.
