Re: “Trump acts swiftly to advance pipelines: ‘From now on we are going to start making pipelines in the United States,’ the president said from the Oval Office” (Jan. 24):
This advance on the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines, signing executive actions to aggressively overhaul America’s energy policy, deals a sharp blow to Barack Obama’s legacy on climate change.
As one of President Trump’s first actions in office, this is a very troubling sign for the fight against climate change. Paired with his selection for the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, and Pruitt’s stance on renewable energy and climate change, Trump’s presidency is set to be one of the most devastating to this planet in the history of the office.
Without action from senators and other representatives, climate change in the next four years could lead to a state of no return for our environment. With rising sea levels, heavy precipitation and storm surges expected to increase flooding and coastal erosion, this will put further strain on an aging infrastructure in the area. With southern Maine’s big coastal community, this could be a bigger and more apparent problem in the near future.
