Statesmanship has nothing to do with the perpetual running for office that has overcome members of Congress and other elected officials. It has to do with furnishing support for the goals of the American people who elected the budding statesmen, and spending time on bringing those goals to fruition, regardless of how the effort affects a statesman’s chances for re-election.

With this in mind, those willing to devote their lives to political service should make a priority of developing a second career. Their actions should never need to be guided by whether their program wins or loses.
