Gomez, Piers earn wins at Patriots Day 5-miler
Rob Gomez of Windham easily won the men’s title and Sheri Piers of Falmouth cruised to the women’s title in the Boys & Girls Club Patriots Day 5-miler Saturday in Portland.
Gomez won in 25 minutes, 20 seconds, well ahead of second-place finisher Ken Akiha of Orono, who finished in 27:04. Piers, who was third overall, won the women’s race in 29:55. Alison Chase of Orono was second in 30:55.
The event also featured a 5K for the first time in its 88-year history.
Grady Jendzejec of Waterville won the men’s race in a time of 19:01.
Karley Piers of Falmouth won the women’s race in 19:48.
There were 128 finishers in the 5-miler and 133 in the 5K.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Condolences poured in for retired NFL player Todd Heap and his family a day after police say the former Pro Bowl tight end accidentally ran over his 3-year-old daughter with a truck, killing her.
Heap was moving the truck at his home in Mesa, a Phoenix suburb, on Friday when he struck the girl, police said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The Baltimore Ravens, Heap’s longtime former team, called the accident “knee-buckling news and an overwhelming tragedy.”
GOLF
PGA TOUR: Jason Dufner had two eagles on the way to a 6-under 65 and a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Dufner, the 2013 PGA Championship winner, started three shots behind co-leaders Graham DeLaet and Luke Donald. But Dufner quickly closed that deficit with eagles on both front-nine par 5s.
DeLaet was second after a 69. Kevin Kisner and Webb Simpson were at 11 under. Kisner shot a 66 and Simpson a 68.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Paul Dunne will take a 2-shot lead into the final round of the Trophee Hassan II with a 4-under 69 in Rabat, Morocco giving him a chance at his first professional title.
CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR: Stephen Ames shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over five players into the final round of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in Duluth, Georgia.
TENNIS
GRAND PRIX HASSAN II: Borna Coric of Croatia will have a shot at the title for the second straight year, taking on third-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday’s final in Marrakech, Morocco.
Coric defeated Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-4 after saving the two break points he faced. Kohlschreiber eased past Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-2.
SOCCER
MLS: Nemanja Nikolic scored twice, Bastian Schweinsteiger added a goal and the Chicago Fire beat the New England Revolution 3-0 in Bridgeview, Illinois.
New England (2-3-1) played a man down after Je-Vaughn Watson was sent off in the 27th after receiving a pair of yellow cards.
HIGH SCHOOLS
GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Briannagh Beaudette and Hallie Schwartzman each scored four times as Kennebunk won its season opener, beating Fryeburg Academy (0-2) 17-1 in Kennebunk.
Beaudette also had an assist. Marran Oakman added three goals and two assists.
Hannah Frye scored for the Raiders.
