SACO — Raymond Henri Girouard, 94, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Pine Point Nursing Home.

He was born May 31, 1922 in Biddeford, the youngest of four children of Napoleon and Georgianna (Armstrong) Girouard and was educated locally, graduating from St. Louis High School in the Class of 1940.

Raymond served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Sept. 23, 1944, he married Laurette Anne Lambert in St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford.

A career welder, he had worked at Bath Iron Works before the war; returning home he was employed with the Saco Lowell Shops until 1952 when he began his 29 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1981.

He was an accomplished and creative carpenter and painter, producing many elaborate wood carvings turnings and paintings.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Paul Girouard, and two sisters: Mrs. Jerome, (Annette) Gagne and Mrs. Arthur (Gabrielle) Lessard.

He is survived by Laurette Girouard, his wife of 72 years, of Saco; a son, Donald E. Girouard and his wife Joan of Saco; two grandchildren, Bonny McCallum and her husband Patrick of Biddeford and Scott Girouard of Saco and his companion Lauren Jordan of Portland; five great- grandchildren, Emily Plourd and her companion Travis Sylvain of Saco, Ana Girouard of Kennebunk, Chelsea McCallum and her companion Josh Lavigne, Joshua and Lauren McCallum, all of Biddeford; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Hope Memorial Chapel 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
