OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A defective switch caused a temporary power outage for nearly 1,500 Central Maine Power customers Sunday night.

CMP Spokeswoman Gail Rice said the power outage that impacted 1,497 customers occurred at 9:53 p.m. She said 416 customers had their power restored an hour and 18 minutes later, and the rest had power restored by 11:40 p.m.

Fire Captain John Gilboy at the scene Sunday night said firefighters received a report of a transformer sparking at the corner of Old Orchard Street and East Grand Avenue.

The power outage impacted the downtown area, and firefighters and police temporarily blocked off part of Old Orchard Street after receiving the call Sunday night.
