SCARBOROUGH — Police said a crash between a car and a dump truck that sent two teenagers to the hospital June 21 was caused by the driver of the car, who allegedly ignored a stop sign.
Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse on Friday said police were still investigating, but charges were likely.
The crash occured just after 2 p.m. when a 2004 Ford Taurus and a 2017 Peterbilt tri-axle dump truck collided at the intersection of Broadturn and Burnham roads.
Sgt. Tom Chard said according to witness accounts and evidence gathered at the scene, Brooklyn Burns, 17, of Portland, allegedly failed to yield at a stop sign on Burnham Road. The Taurus was hit by a dump truck driven by Robert Heal, 64, of Buxton, who was not hurt in the crash.
Heal was driving the dump truck northwest on Broadturn Road when he struck the front quarter panel of the car on the driver’s side, pushing the vehicle off the road and upright into a ditch.
Burns had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries, along with another teenager who had minor injuries.
The crash closed the road for about two hours.
