South Portland American shut out by Conn. Fairfield

South Portland American was held to two hits in a 8-0 loss Monday to Connecticut’s Fairfield American at the New England Little League Regional in Bristol, Connecticut.

Richie Gilboy and Aiden Lee each had singles for South Portland American, the Maine champions for 11- and 12-year-olds. Fairfield American scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third and five more in the fifth.

South Portland American, which won its regional opener Sunday against Vermont 9-7, faces an elimination game at 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. Cumberland American of Rhode Island.

The winner of the New England Regional heads to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 17-27.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor says he is ready to give Andrew Wiggins a max contract extension on his rookie deal worth close to $150 million.

Wiggins’ scoring numbers have improved in each of his first three seasons. He averaged 23.6 points per game and shot 35.6 percent from 3-point range last season.

HOCKEY

OLYMPICS: The NHL has decided that players with active NHL contracts, even those in the minors, will not be allowed to participate in the Olympics next February in South Korea.

This means players signed to two-way NHL contracts or who are loaned to minor league affiliates by their clubs won’t be available to the United States, Canada or other national teams.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Kasey Kahne is out at Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the season.

The Brickyard 400 winner was released from the final year of his contract, allowing him to pursue another Cup ride for 2018.

Hendrick has seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman in the fold for next season.

TENNIS

ITF: Former French Open finalist Sara Errani must serve a two-month doping ban after testing positive for the banned substance letrozole in a test taken in February, the International Tennis Federation said.

Errani blamed contamination from her mother’s breast cancer medication.

Errani’s ban will end on Oct. 2, precluding her from playing in the U.S. Open.

SOCCER

U.S. SOCCER: American goalkeeper Hope Solo is looking to resume playing and says she has had offers to play overseas.

She was handed a six-month suspension and her contract with U.S. Soccer was terminated last year following the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after she called Sweden’s team “cowards” for their defensive play.

MLS: The Seattle Sounders brought back midfielder Lamar Neagle in a trade with D.C. United.

Seattle reacquired Neagle for his fourth stint with the club. Neagle played for the Sounders in 2009, 2011 and from 2013-15, appearing in 116 MLS matches for Seattle during that time. The 30-year-old native of Federal Way, Washington, is fourth in club history with 26 goals.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador will retire next month after riding in the Spanish Vuelta.
