CLEVELAND — Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will start the season opener against Pittsburgh, the 27th QB to start for Cleveland since 1999.

Kizer showed Coach Hue Jackson enough in Saturday’s exhibition start against Tampa Bay to secure the job. Jackson officially picked Kizer over veterans Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler on Sunday, saying he “earned the right.”

JETS: New York claimed defensive end Kony Ealy off waivers from the Patriots. Ealy was traded to New England in March, but cut on Saturday.

The Jets acquired safety Terrence Brooks from Philadelphia for cornerback Dexter McDougle. Brooks will provide depth at a thin position.

CHIEFS: Running back Spencer Ware could require season-ending surgery after tearing one ligament in his right knee and damaging another during Friday’s game in Seattle.

FALCONS: Running back Devonta Freeman will return to practice on Monday as a final stage of his concussion protocol.

SUNDAY’S GAMES

BEARS 19, TITANS 7: Mike Glennon capped an opening 96-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Dion Sims, helping his case to be Chicago’s starting quarterback in a road victory.

WASHINGTON 23, BENGALS 17: Andy Dalton was 8 of 13 for 70 yards and Cincinnati’s first-team offense and defense looked sharp in a game Washington won at home on the strength of its backups.
